SEJARAH SINGKAT KOPASSUS
Sejak Pengakuan Kedaulatan RI oleh Belanda tgl 27 Desember 1949 dan beberapa Pemberontakan di wilayah Indonesia (APRA, Andi Azis, RMS) mengilhami dibentuknya Satuan Pemukul Fleksibel yang cepat dan tepat dalam menghadapi sasaran dan medan yang berat. Pembentukan Satuan tersebut dipelopori oleh Letkol Slamet Riyadi dan dilanjutkan oleh Kolonel A.E. Kawilarang sebagai Pejabat Panglima Tentara dan Teritorium-III/SLW.
Melalui Instruksi Panglima Tentara dan Terirorium-III/SLW tanggal 16 April 1952 dengan terbentuknya Kesatuan Komando Teritorium-III/SLW yang merupakan cikal bakal "Korps Baret Merah" :
* Tahun 1953 diubah menjadi Kesatuan Komando Angkatan Darat (KKAD)
* Tanggal 25 Juli 1955 KKAD diubah menjadi Resimen Pasukan Komando Angkatan Darat (RPKD)
* Tahun 1956 dengan dibuka pendidikan terjun payung maka RPKD diubah menjadi Resimen Para Komando Angkatan Darat (RPKAD)
* Tanggal 12 Pebruari 1966 RPKAD diganti menjadi Pusat Pasukan Khusus Angkatan Darat (PUSPASSUS TNI AD)
* Tanggal 17 Pebruari 1970 PUSPASSUS TNI AD diubah menjadi Komando Pasukan Sandi Yudha (KOPASANDHA)
* Tanggal 21 Mei 1985 KOPASANDHA diubah menjadi Komando Pasukan Khusus (KOPASSUS) s.d. sekarang
